Lead Mechanical Design Engineer

Reporting to our Head of Mechanical Engineering, you will work with members of our cross-functional engineering team to design and develop various mechanical subsystems in our product, from concept to mass production. WHAT YOU'LL DO

You will design, prototype, and test motorized and manual mechanical mechanisms, while maintaining the industrial design standards of a consumerized robotic product. You will transition those designs into production with ODMs/JDMs.

  • Assess, select, design, review, test, and debug mechanical solutions for performance, cost, availability, suitability, reliability, etc.
  • Calculate and model forces, moments, and stresses within parts during use, with both simple spreadsheets and FEA
  • Review and select materials and manufacturing processes
  • Design parts and assemblies in 3D CAD
  • Optimize parts for selected manufacturing processes like Plastic Injection Molding, Sheet Metal Forming, Die casting, etc.
  • Conduct tolerance analysis for critical tolerance loops
  • Design power transmissions, gearboxes, guiding mechanisms, latching mechanisms, snap fits, etc.
  • Document parts and assemblies using standard dimensioning & tolerancing
  • Prototype, test, and debug mechanical solutions to ensure product functionality, manufacturability, and reliability
  • Generate and evaluate functional specifications and product requirements
  • Conduct failure analysis on failed parts/assemblies during NPI and MP
  • Work closely with electrical engineers to integrate electronic systems into the product and transfer the design in production
  • Collaborate with Industrial Designers to maintain the design intent from concept to mass production
  • Work with project managers to define assignments, schedules, quality expectations, and other project criteria.
  • Work with suppliers and manufacturing partners to create manufacturing & assembly process documentation
  • Work with Manufacturing Engineering, subcontractors, and suppliers to resolve manufacturing issues
  • Collaborate with Supplier Quality and Manufacturing Engineering to evaluate new and existing suppliers
  • Likely travel to Asia for New Product Introduction (NPI) phase, to evaluate pilot parts, qualify assembly procedures, ensure build quality, and address yield issues
REQUIREMENTSMinimum
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or similar field plus 3 years of related experience
  • Experience designing consumer products, appliances, or robots. Must have transferred mechanical designs into medium to large scale production while maintaining industrial design intent.
  • Experience applying the design method: brainstorming, selection, fabrication, testing, and iteration.
  • Proficiency with Solidworks / Creo Parts Design, Assemblies, Static Simulations, Motion Analysis
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis, ideally with Solidworks or Creo
  • Experience with motors, motion control, transmission design, and simulation
  • Excellent knowledge of prototyping and rapid prototyping methods (3D printing, Machining, Laser Cutting, Waterjet, etc)
  • Excellent knowledge of plastic and metal manufacturing processes (Plastic Injection Molding, Sheet Metal Forming, Die Casting, CNC, etc.)
  • Excellent knowledge of materials and material properties and selection
  • Experience with Industrialization and DFMA processes
  • Excellent knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing and tolerance analysis
Plus
  • MS / Ph D. in Mechanical Engineering or similar field plus 5 years of related experience
  • Experience with Failure analysis
  • Usage of top-down CAD design methods like the Master Model method.
  • CAD 3D surfacing skills
  • Design knowledge of linear guides, bearings, latching mechanisms, and springs
  • Mandarin Chinese fluency and literacy
  • Experience working with and managing Asian Contract Manufacturers
