FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE: Employees in this class perform skilled journey-level plumbing work in the maintenance, installation, and repair of, pumps, dom. hot water, food service equipment, plumbing systems, sewer pumps, green houses, some boiler work and other associated equipment and control systems. Work also includes operating computerized controls for plumbing systems. This employee may serve on a team or may assist other skilled mechanics. Work is performed in varying weather conditions at low to medium heights requiring the use of ladders and under established and enforced safety conditions. Work is reviewed by Plumbing & Boiler Supervision and Division Management in progress and upon completion for adherence to established maintenance and repair standards. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs installation and maintenance on a variety of plumbing equipment and systems. Performs repairs on heating systems and components such as, circulating pumps, steam systems, steam traps, return pumps, domestic hot water systems, hydronic water systems, some boiler work, supply lines, air compressors, and other regulating valves and sensors. Performs installation and repair of plumbing systems, plumbing fixtures, water coolers and sewer pumps. Rodding or jetting sewer lines and drain lines. Performs installation and repair of food service equipment, grease traps, and dish machines. Participates in keeping service truck clean and stocked with needed parts, supplies, and tools; picks up parts and supplies from vendors. Strict adherence to OSHA safety standards. Operates a computerized work order system. Operates a variety of hand and power tools. Clear snow and ice from driveways, parking lots, and sidewalks. Performs related tasks as required. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE. SKILLS and ABILITIES Knowledge of the principles and techniques of the plumbing trade. Knowledge of the methods, tools, parts, and equipment used in the plumbing trade. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and related safety precautions in area assigned to work. Knowledge of and ability to perform diagnostic troubleshooting of plumbing equipment. Ability to detect by inspection broken or worn parts. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to read and interpret service manuals and schematic drawings. Ability to operate vehicles safely. Ability to maintain routine records. Ability to exercise the physical strength and agility necessary to perform job tasks, with a minimum of 50 lbs. lifting and carrying capacity and occasional 75 lb. lifting capacity. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and school personnel. Ability to maintain accurately routine records. Ability to work overtime on short notice, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Maintain a computerized work order system that tracks time and material. General knowledge of computers. Position requires the ability to work occasional scheduled overtime and be available for emergency overtime when the need arises by responding to after-hours emergencies, which may include weekends and holidays. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from high school or equivalent, supplemented by course work in plumbing, and four years of experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license Ability to pass pre-employment screening.
